2 Theoretical Basis for Pei's "Lanzhou Formula" in Treating Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
Pei's "Lanzhou Formula" is a prescription summarized by Professor Pei Zhengxue after decades of clinical practice, gaining fame when it successfully cured a patient named Ma Changsheng who suffered from acute monocytic leukemia (M₅). In 1974, the Suzhou Hematology Conference conducted a professional evaluation of this successful case and subsequently named the formula the "Lanzhou Formula." Over more than forty years of clinical verification, this formula has proven to be an effective remedy for treating hematological diseases. The composition of this formula includes:
Radix Adenophorae, Radix Pseudostellariae, Rhizoma Panaxis, Radix Codonopsis, Radix Rehmanniae, Fructus Corni, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Rhizoma Ophiopogonis, Fructus Schisandrae, Ramulus Cinnamomi, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Rhizoma Zingiberis, Jujube, Glycyrrhiza, and Fructus Tritici
Among these ingredients, four ginsengs strongly tonify qi, serving as the main herbs for reinforcing the body and consolidating its foundation; Shengmai San replenishes qi and nourishes yin; the "three tonics" in Liuwei Dihuang Tang tonify the kidneys and generate marrow, with the yin-yang relationship between the kidneys and the liver, and marrow itself generating blood; Gui Zhi Tang regulates the defensive qi externally and stabilizes the zang-fu organs internally; Ganmai Dazao Tang nourishes the heart and calms the spirit, ensuring that when the heart and spirit are stable, the blood is also stable. As stated in "Jingyue Quanshu · Xulao": "If qi is deficient due to lack of essence, one should tonify essence to transform it into qi; if essence is deficient due to lack of qi, one should tonify qi to generate essence." Therefore, the brilliance of this formula lies in simultaneously tonifying the spleen and kidneys, integrating the methods of reinforcing the body and expelling pathogenic factors into one, combining tonification with purging, prioritizing tonification while supplementing with purging.
