Diabetes-Related Kidney Disease and Blood Viscosity 1999.4.1
According to the eighth volume, first issue of the Journal of Hemorheology (pages 34–36), diabetes mellitus (DM) is divided into Type 1 (IDDM) and Type 2 (NIDDM). The former is insulin-dependent, while the latter is non-insulin-dependent. This article focuses on 169 cases of Type 2 diabetes, examining patients with concurrent diabetic nephropathy (DN) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). It was found that the incidence of DN among Type 2 diabetics is approximately 50%, exceeding 50% in patients over 60 years old and falling below 50% in those under 60. The diagnostic criterion for DN is the total 24-hour urinary protein excretion rate: less than 20µg/min indicates no kidney disease; more than 20µg/min indicates DN (diabetic nephropathy), with less than 200µg/min classified as微量蛋白 and more than 200µg/min as大量蛋白尿. Hemorheological examinations confirmed that diabetic patients have significantly higher blood viscosity than normal individuals; those with DN exhibit even higher viscosity than those without DN, and most patients with DR also have DN. In terms of gender, women tend to have slightly higher rates of DN and DR compared to men.
