Secondary Hyperparathyroidism Following Chronic Renal Failure 1999.4.1
In cases of chronic renal failure, as BUN and CO2-P levels fluctuate, patients may experience polyuria, elevated potassium levels, elevated calcium levels, and decreased phosphorus levels. The increase in calcium levels is not solely attributable to CRF; a more significant factor is secondary hyperparathyroidism arising from renal failure. Elevated calcium levels can affect myocardial contractility, potentially leading to heart failure and cardiac arrest in severe cases, while also promoting apoptosis of parathyroid cells, which in turn can suppress parathyroid hyperactivity. Chronic renal failure often results in hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. This is a typical manifestation of CRF, and the presence of elevated calcium levels indicates that secondary hyperparathyroidism has already developed.
